Internet hotspot in my favorite StarbucksMy favorite starbucks location ( 17th, Marine Drive, West Vancouver ) has internet access now. For about 35 $ / month I can go online. Makes me wonder if I have to ditch my office and use Starbucks instead, after all I don’t have one of those goth looking Java girls with miniskirts, boots, black tops, spiky hair and cool makeup in my office to supply my cravings for sugar and caffeine.
Anyhow that means I can spend my after wok hours here, do some freelance work, socialize, read online contents and see lots of people around me all the time.

Life has a length, width and height. Length is the number of years we get to live, width is the quality of life at a specific time, height is the sense of happiness and joy that we experience.

We have some control over the length, a lot more control over the width, and the height is our reward.

It is amazing how much effort we spend on the length of our lives, and not much on improving the width of it.

I had a girlfriend that I lost to cancer less than 4 years ago. Before then all I could do was to take her out on dates, so we could enjoy those moments without thinking about future. I knew when I’d come back from University that summer she may not be there. That’s exactly what happened.

After that I am thankful for just being alive and try to enjoy the most simple pleasures of life. People, dogs, cats, birds, Art, Nature, Culture, Music, Dance, Science, food, drinks, … .

I have a younger brother that goes out partying with 10 dollars in his pocket, and I have to spent 5- 6 times more to get the same experience. Some people spend thousands more to get the same experience. The older we get the more we lose the capacity of appreciating and enjoying life.

If I can see, taste, feel, hear, if I can go out spend 2 dollars on a good cup of coffee, flirt with the barista, come out feel the rain drops on my face, sit outside and dream about the future, if I can help others and make a difference in somebody’s life, If I can give back to the community, I am already a happy man.

If I have goals, ambition, and persistence I am already a successful man too.

One can write ( 2 + 2 = 5 ) on a piece of paper and get away with it; however if ( 2 + 2 ) is given to a well functioning calculator the answer is always 4.

It is amazing that many ignore this very basic principal. Marketing associates and Product Developers create specifications on Paper and if they don’t have an Information Architect on their team they are well capable of making deadly logical mistakes because papers don’t give you errors no matter how wrong you are.

Specifications find their way to the Technology department. Technology Department wants to keep everybody happy at all costs, so members do not question what is given to them. Instead they bend backwards to find workarounds, hacks and sometimes create the illusion that things are working. By doing such an approach, they end up doing additional hours of work to produce a buggy, duck-taped, spaghetti and meatball application that becomes the enterprise software.

There is unfortunately a common misconception among people that computers are unruly entities and all softwares are always buggy anyway. In other words there is a high tolerance for mediocre quality software.

Mistakes on top of mistakes … end user is the one who loses
In fact everybody loses

It would be better if Marketing and Product Development team include System Analysts and Information Architects on their team and invite them to their meetings, so business flow bugs can be spotted and resolved before they find their way to the specifications.

Technology department team should consider that Marketing and Product development people are human too and capable of making mistakes; so if there are any logical flaws in the specification, instead of bending backwards to find a workaround, they better challenge and discuss the issues with the stakeholders and let them know that: What works on paper doesn’t neccessarily make logical sense to the computers, or real life.

When there is good communication and common sense, everybody wins.

Specialization is one of my most favorite songs from Marilyn Monroe. Guess why!

Love Marilyn

If you bruise the people in the news the people that the magazines refer to
You’ll find that they are naturally soign the special ones that all of us defer to

They’ve each a trait that seems to state “first raters”
Which separates them from the small per tatters

Maria Callas
Is booking Dallas
The carpet’s rolled out and they’re sold out clear to the skies

Specialization, specialization
They’ll love your high notes if… If you specialize

When Elvis rotates
Each creep notates
It may look funny,
but the money’s what it supplies

Specialization, specialization
You’ll meet the Colonel if… If you specialize

Salome did it with veils
Abe Lincoln did it with brains
Toledo did it with scales
The Chinese built that Wall

Specialized star

Marc Clement gives the gals the tremors
This Casanovan sure has the roverest eyes

Specialization, specialization
You’ll rule the barnyard if…
If you specialize

The Farrows did it with springs
And Darwin did it with links
Some robbers did it with Brinks
Carnegie used a Hall

Specialized star

Van Cliberen caused us a high burn
While we were blushin’ some Russian gape in the prize

Specialization, specialization
They’ll give you medals if…
They’ll love your high notes if…
You’ll meet the Colonel if…
You’ll rule the barnyard if…
If you specialize!

I specialize!

As a technology guy I am expected to talk about Technology on my blog. Give out the latest CSS hack for IE, write a lengthy article about AJAX, or brag about Joomla. But then I notice I usually blog when I am trying to stay away from my work for a while. I want to talk about anything but computers at this moment …

I went to the gym this evening. I use to go jogging on the Sea Walk, but now that it is raining like crazy in Vancouver, I could nolonger get out in the evenings. I could feel the withdrawal syndrome due to the lack of physical activity. I was feeling depressed, cranky and tired; not to mention fat and stupid!

Fortunately West Van Aquatic Center is only a block away from where I live. This place has a heavenly fitness center with all the equipments one can imagine. There you go … I’m back on the track, and I feel great.

Premier Go

Premier Go is an e-Learning web application that I designed and implemented 2.5 Month ago for Premier using Mambo CMS. It is probably the only e-Learning app developed in Mambo and I really like it when it is being used like this by thousands of registered teachers and students throughout Canada and US.
